Neighborhood Readiness Project (NRP)

neighborhood-readiness-projectIndividuals, families, consortiums and houses of worship are invited to become an integral part of The Neighborhood Readiness Project.

In the event of natural disaster, systemic economic failure, or food/fuel-supply interruption, local markets have, on average, only 3 days of inventory on hand. Residents of Nevada County are invited to participate in a short-term community campaign through the month of December 2009. The following local markets will facilitate discounted bulk ordering of staple goods and storage supplies for participants who will agree to store 50 to 200 pounds of staple foods at home (bulk beans, grains, heirloom and non-hybrid seeds, acorns, sprouting seeds, cooking oil, etc):*

In Grass Valley:

Briar Patch Co-operative Market

Natural Selection Food & Wine Warehouse

Natural Valley Health Foods

Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply

SPD Market

In Nevada City:

California Organics

SPD Market

In North San Juan:

Mother Truckers Market

The APPLE Center for Sustainable Living will offer scheduled long-term packaging assistance and protocols on food storage and preparation, including regional foods.**

In future, if the supply trucks aren’t rolling, we’ll be able to take care of our neighbors for a few transitional months. Nevada County will stand as a model for stored-food wealth, preparedness and generosity-of-spirit. This program will re-launch every third year to facilitate foodstuffs rotation.

Neighborhood Readiness Project is sponsored by KVMR Community Radio, with special support from The Union newspaper and United Natural Foods International.. and can be found as a Facebook event.
